The home of independent shopping where we support small businesses to reach their audience
WHAT IS THE HUMMINGBIRD COLLECTIVE?
The Hummingbird Collective is an innovative concept created by Nicola Hudson, the owner of Little Hummingbird Events and Hudson & Porter.
This collective serves as a gathering place for makers, creators, crafters, and artisans of all kinds, including small independent businesses. It provides a beautiful space where each participant supports one another in achieving their trading goals.
The Hummingbird Collective first opened its doors in Wakefield in November 2023, located on the Upper Mall of the Ridings Shopping Centre. It quickly gained popularity.
In 2024, the company experienced unprecedented growth, leading to the launch of three additional stores by June of that year, bringing the total to four. The collective brand continues to diversify annually, attracting an increasing number of unique and unusual creators who describe the space as "their happy place."
The group now has 6 stores with more planned. Our current locations are Wakefield, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Elsecar Heritage Centre, Retford, and Manor Farm Oldcotes.
Being part of a collective may not be suitable for everyone; however, if you are passionate about your work and enjoy connecting with others who share that passion, you are already halfway there!
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN JOINING THE HUMMINGBIRD COLLECTIVE?
For those unfamiliar with the concept, a collective is essentially a collaborative space for crafters, makers, and creators to come together. Each participant hires their own space within the shop to display their products, create, and collaborate with like-minded small businesses. This arrangement allows members to reach new audiences and regular customers while building a community of people who appreciate their work. We do not operate on a "rent-a-shelf" basis and do not charge commissions. Instead, we aim to create a model that aligns with your circumstances, finances, and lifestyle commitments.
You might be at a stage in your life or career where you're considering a job change, exploring a hobby, or even thinking about retirement. Perhaps you're looking for a new outlet for your creativity or a way to make your hobby profitable. Maybe you've always wanted to run a small shop but are hesitant due to the costs and commitments involved. The collective model might be the solution for you.
Collectives, craft hubs, and independent galleries have become increasingly popular during challenging economic times, as many individuals cannot afford to start a business on their own or have enough products to fill a shop. Sharing space and receiving guidance and support can make this a viable option.
Each store has its own unique style, providing ample space to display your products effectively. We will collaborate with you to discuss optimal ways to promote and showcase your products, accounting for the environment, placement, and lighting.
INTERESTED IN JOINING?
If you’ve read this far, that’s a great sign! Here are some important points to consider if you wish to join one of our collective stores:
-

-
You may exercise a 30-day notice period at any time, but we ask that you speak to us first in case we can address any issues or concerns.
-
You should be able to visit the shop regularly to stock, restock, and display your products.
-
You should be eager to promote and advertise your role in the collective.
-
A monthly rental fee will apply, but there are no commissions taken.
-
You will be able to display your business name (ideally with a logo, business card, or sign, which we can help create if needed).
-
You should be able to dedicate at least one day per week to work in the shop.
-
We offer stockist-only options if shop time is not feasible for you.
-
If you have more time than money, we can work with you on a reduced rental fee in exchange for more hours dedicated to the collective.
-
You would need to be available during shop opening hours on your chosen workday.
-
You must have your own public liability insurance, similar to what is required for trading at markets.
-
You should be willing to join a WhatsApp group to connect with other like-minded individuals who wish to support each other’s success.
Rental fees vary by location based on different rate brackets and postcodes, and will be discussed privately. In most cases, we provide the shop fittings unless you bring a unique setup or display that you prefer. We encourage you to showcase your products in a way that best reflects your brand.
